Remove apostrophe used for text formatted number in Libreoffice

January 2, 2013 2 comments

To enter the number as text, the easiest way is to enter the number starting with an apostrophe (for example, ‘00008). The apostrophe will not appear in the cell, and the number will be formatted as text.

If apostrophe is not removed, calculation operations will not be include the cell & result will be wrong. So You may need to remove apostrophe or Formatting Numbers as Text or formatting mark or special non-displaying character to do calculate with this number.

To Convert text formated cells to numbers in libre-office, follow the below steps :

  1. Choose Edit – Find & Replace
  2. In the Search for box, enter ^[0-9]
  3. In the Replace with box, enter &
  4. Check Regular expressions
  5. Click Replace All

Note: ^[0-9] regular expression means ‘other than 0-9 numericals’.

If we paste text from pdf, You will have single line paragraph instead of full text paragraph.

You can use Libre-office or open-office auto correction to get full paragraph from single line paragraph.

Step are given below :

Copy the text from pdf viewer or acrobat.

Paste the text in libreoffice Writer. Text may look look like below

2012-12-07 12:11:46

go to auto correct option in tools menu

2012-12-07 12:09:53

enable the option combine single line to paragraph.

2012-12-07 12:10:36

Change minimum percentage % using edit button[It is minimum % of single paragraph length used to combine to full paragraph. If it is lesser, it will not combine].

2012-12-07 12:11:05

then go to last format menu & auto correct & press apply

2012-12-07 12:12:28

Note: while pasting text from pdf document, please ensure that the style is default.

This option is very useful in combing single line paragraph.

To rotate an image in libreoffice [90 /180]

We cannot rotate directly rotate image in libreoffice writer.

Right click on image –> edit with external tool… –> open in external editor .

Rotate to required Degree & save & close. Image get automatically get updated in writer.

Or

If you are using Linux, you can use gthumb for editing the image.

If image is in png format while inserting, You can rotate desired degree in gthumb & Save. The following option should be used – image size to bounding box & background to transparent.

You can use any image editor that support png image, image size to bounding box & background to transparent.

But text  will have square area bounded to image. To re-flow the text you can use contour option in wrap menu.

You can get as shown in the image below.

Or

you can open the file in draw & rotate. Then paste file.

Note:  Now this bug has fixed in the Libre office version 4.1.

February 6, 2012 10 comments

If you copy something from a web page (text & images together) from any web browser like Firefox/chrome/IE and paste it in LO writer, the document save with the images, but images are inserted as links in the documents rather than getting copied to the document.

Screenshot from 2013-02-06 14:49:02

To solve this, go to edit menu — > Links . break the links that are used for images. & save document.

Speed up LibreOffice 3.4 / 3.5

Some settings may improve LibreOffice’s loading time and responsiveness. However, some also increase RAM usage, so use them carefully. They can all be accessed under Menu –> Tools > Options.

  • Under Memory:
    • Reduce the number of Undo steps to a figure lower than 100, to something like 20 or 30 steps.
    • Under Graphics cache, set Use for LibreOffice to 128 MB (up from the original 20MB).
    • Set Memory per object to 20MB (up from the default 5MB).
    • If you use LibreOffice often, check LibreOffice Quickstarter.
